Every year, starting on the last Sunday in May, Canadians celebrate National AccessAbility Week (NAAW). This week is an opportunity to celebrate the valuable contributions and leadership of Canadians with disabilities, and with these resources, you can bring the conversation to your secondary school or class.
This year, National AccessAbility Week will take place from May 28 to June 3, 2023. Join us in recognizing Canadians with disabilities by booking an RHFSP Ambassador Presentation for your class, using our free lesson plans, starting the day with morning announcements on disability awareness, or sharing the 'Just Like U' video with your students. Let's start conversations about disability inclusion!
Ambassador Presentations
With a diversity of vision, hearing and mobility disabilities, the Rick Hansen Foundation Ambassadors create personal connections and challenge stereotypes through virtual presentations to your class, school or community group. Request a free National AccessAbility Week presentation for your class!
Morning Announcements
With an announcement idea for each day, these brief facts about NAAW and disability awareness will help you keep the conversation going all week long with your students.
Disability Inclusion Lesson Plans
IDEAs on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (Secondary)
Conversations on the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) are becoming more common, however disability and accessibility are sometimes left out of the conversation. This lesson will explore diversity, equity and inclusion through the lens of physical disability, and discuss the barriers which youth with disabilities face.
Advocacy and Allyship (Secondary)
In this lesson students work in groups to brainstorm peer advocacy solutions for school situations. Students develop an understanding that advocacy can be a means to ensure others' inclusion and sense of belonging at school.
Meet Elena, Jaelyn, and Tai, who encourage all of us to create a more inclusive world.
