Vecova Centre for Disability Services and Research

Calgary, Alberta
Velcova Center Team

Project Description

Vecova Centre for Disability Services and Research is a social services and health centre for people with disabilities to come for living support, employment, and wellness opportunities. Vecova’s recreation centre is also open to the entire community looking to live a healthy and active lifestyle and visitors also include parents with new babies and toddlers, active adults, seniors, and people with temporary disabilities.

Vecova’s Barrier Buster grant will go towards making the internal doors between the recreation centre and the service area automatic, and replacing the lifts in the change rooms, allowing all visitors to independently use and enjoy the recreation centre, gathering space, service area and washrooms.

Project Team Q&A

  1. Why did you decide to break down barriers in your community?

We believe that each person, regardless of their ability, should have access to community facilities and support. We wanted to increase the accessibility of our doors and wheelchair lifts so everyone can use all areas of the Centre. The pool in our recreation centre is popular but the changing rooms require new lifts so people with disabilities can also enjoy it. Through this barrier buster project, Vecova hopes to lead the way for more inclusive and accessible facilities in the community.

  2. How is this project going to make a difference in your community?

Vecova’s recreation centre is available for all members of the community, regardless of ability or age. This year alone, over 217,000 adults, children and seniors accessed our facility. Our recreation centre is essential to reducing isolation, increasing community connections, and creating a space that accommodates everyone. This project will allow Vecova to meet the growing needs for an accessible facility where all members of the community can gather together and participate in physical activities.

  3. What’s the best thing about being a Barrier Buster?

The best part of being a Barrier Buster is knowing that we are actively working towards an inclusive and accessible society. We’re proud to support everyone in the community, and operate out of a facility that will allow all our participants and community members to access the support they need. While a new door and lifts may not seem like much of a difference, we know that these small changes will have a huge impact on those who use our facility every day.
