The Peterson Creek Park’s Grassland Loop Trail project will be the City of Kamloops’s first attempt to open up the currently limited-accessibility Nature Parks to a wider group of people of varying abilities. The Barrier Buster team will lead a conversion and re-configuration of the existing single track, dirt and gravel path in a grassland area to an accessible trail. After completion, the trail will be centrally located, easy-to-access by car or public transit, and accessible for all park visitors with physical and intellectual disabilities, and the families of children that have severe mobility challenges.
The city of Kamloops strives to provide recreational activities to all of its residents. Kamloops citizens use the landscape in our city’s backyard to bike, hike, stroll and explore. Currently, in our Nature Parks, those activities are reserved for those without mobility challenges. This project is our first attempt at opening up our parks to a wider group of people with various degrees of ability and mobility.
Being able to get into the Kamloops backcountry is a way to participate in local recreational pursuits. This projects is a first step in helping to make our parks more accessible, breaking down barriers to recreation and social inclusion.
The ability to create opportunities. Public parks are for everyone to enjoy and this grant is such an amazing way to help people get out there and experience what Kamloops has to offer!
