Rick Hansen Honoured to Participate in the Ongoing Journey of the Paralympic Torch

Share

March 5th 2010

On Saturday March 6th, in Victoria, BC, Rick Hansen will participate in the 10-day journey of the Paralympic Torch Relay, as it makes its way across the country to the opening ceremonies of the Paralympic Games in Vancouver, on March 12th.

“After the incredible success of the Olympics, I am proud to participate in the ongoing excitement of the 2010 Winter Games”, said Rick Hansen, President & CEO, Rick Hansen Foundation. "We have two events inside one Games, and as the Paralympic flame makes its way across Canada in its own unique way, it symbolizes the values we have of being an accessible and inclusive country.”

The 2010 Paralympic Torch Relay is an important event to connect Canadians to the Games. Building upon the enthusiasm of the Olympic Games, Vancouver is now preparing to host yet another group of outstanding athletes, who are best in class, and whose athletic achievements will inspire and amaze us. It will be exciting for Canadians, and people from around the world, to witness the talents of these outstanding athletes.

As a young man, Rick Hansen pursued his passion for athletics, becoming one of Canada’s most celebrated athletes. He won 19 International Wheelchair Marathons, 6 Paralympic medals, was a participant in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984, and won numerous International track medals.

Rick participated in the Olympic Torch Relay as the community torchbearer in his hometown of Richmond, BC, and was one of the final torchbearers at the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Vancouver on February 12th. He also volunteered his time during the Olympic Games as Honourary Co-Mayor of the Athletes Village.
