January 29th 2010
Hi everyone, thanks so much for checking out our new Rick Hansen Foundation website and blog! I hope it provides you with helpful and informative updates on our work at the Foundation, as well as some fun details about what I’m doing these days.
We are on the verge of a very exciting time, as Vancouver prepares to host the 2010 Winter Games. It will be an incredible time to showcase our city, celebrate our local and international athletes, and honour their commitment to sport.
I’m personally looking forward to the Games for a variety of reasons, the first being because of my history as an athlete in both the Paralympics and the Olympics. I love the energy and the spirit of the Games and am looking forward to experiencing it again. Of course, this time things will be very different than when I competed! This time around, my Games experience will revolve around my role as co-Mayor of the Olympic Athletes Village. I’m looking forward to welcoming our visitors from around the world, meeting the athletes, hearing about their journeys, and celebrating their experiences with them.
And on the heels of the Games – on the same day as the closing ceremonies of the Paralympic Games – I look forward to celebrating the launch of the 25th Anniversary of my Man In Motion World Tour. I can’t believe it’s been 25 years since we left Vancouver, inspired by the dream of raising awareness about the potential of people with disabilities, and creating an accessible and inclusive world. As Canada hosts the world at the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, I am encouraged by how far we have come towards the realization of that dream, and I look forward to continuing our journey.
I hope you will join us as we celebrate these exciting times!
Thanks everyone,
Rick
