With its Access4All Barrier Buster grant, McMillan Elementary School will build a universally accessible, sustainable, and inclusive outdoor space that will be enjoyed by all children of all ages and abilities. The new playground will include a glider with a ramp that allows interactive play through imagination, movement and side-by-side stimulation. The glider features ample room for two wheelchair passengers, as well as twin bench seating to accommodate peers, friends or family.
One of our Barrier Buster team members is a mother of four children, with her youngest daughters both having cerebral palsy and using wheelchairs for mobility. Having to witness the constant exclusion while being with siblings and/or peers in a social play setting, like a playground, is extremely disheartening for her. A playground is meant to be an engaging and interactive experience where children learn and explore. It is a not a setting where someone should feel left on the sidelines as a spectator.
The addition to the current playground will address the needs of all children with both visible and invisible disabilities as well as the entire community as a whole. This will be the first of its kind in Abbotsford, setting the example for our entire community and creating change and awareness for the future.
Awareness and education! In order to gain acceptance and understanding, education and awareness is key. It is important for children to be given opportunities to play and interact amongst ALL their peers in order to create positive change in society. Thank you so much to RHF and the Government of Canada for providing support to create these opportunities and make a difference for all needs in our communities.
