Kinsmen Sherbrook Pool and Transcona Swimming Centre

Winnipeg, Manitoba
The team of Kinsmen Sherbrook Indoor Pool and Transcona Swimming pool

Project Description

The City of Winnipeg’s Access Advisory Committee selected two aquatic-themed Barrier Buster projects: The Kinsmen Sherbrook Pool, the only indoor accessible pool with warm water, and the Transcona Swimming Centre, a regional outdoor pool. Both attract visitors from across the whole city.

Accessibility improvements will include the purchase a Hoyer-styled lift for the pool, and an accessible entrance ramp for the swimming centre. These two projects will make an enormous impact in Winnipeg by allowing both venues to provide better customer service, and independent participation for people with disabilities.

Project Team Q&A

  1. Why did you decide to break down barriers in your community?

Winnipeg’s Access Advisory Committee works to recognize the accessibility gaps in our delivery of service in the community, and to celebrate and embrace our differences to be a complete and whole community.

The Sherbrook Pool was destined to close due to structural deficiencies, but was saved with community support for a facility that is inclusive and accessible. This heritage building will serve the whole community for a very long time.

  2. How is this project going to make a difference in your community?

The Kinsmen Sherbrook Pool is the perfect example of community inclusivity and being able to augment all the universal design elements already planned for this massive retrofitting.

The Transcona Aquatic Centre will see a much needed renovation to the existing entrance ramp so that everyone can access the whole facility. By increasing accessibility, this opens their doors to the whole community.

  3. What’s the best thing about being a Barrier Buster?

We will be able to lead by example and serve the community with integrity, espris de corps, and commitment to the concept of a fully accessible city.
