Tuesday, February 9th, 2010 – day 103 of the
Olympic Torch Relay– Rick Hansen was given the honour of participating in the Torch Relay and lighting the community cauldron at the celebration in his hometown of Richmond, BC.
As a crowd of nearly 20,000 people watched, Rick arrived at the
Richmond O Zoneand wheeled his course, high-fiving onlookers and cheering with the crowd, as he made his way up to the stage where he proudly lit the cauldron. The excitement and exhilaration was palpable, and it was a moment Rick will not soon forget.
"To be able to light the cauldron in Richmond is one of my proudest moments", says Rick.
And for Rick, last night's event embodied not only the spirit of the Olympic Games, but the Paralympic Games, and all Canadians as well.
"It's two events inside one Games", he says. "This flame represents not only our Canadian athletes who are working tirelessly towards their goals and dreams; it symbolizes a sense of hope and possibility for everyone. Because we all have the ability to make a difference and to achieve great things."
Thank you to the
City of Richmond for inviting Rick to participate in such an outstanding, historic event. To
VANOC, who put on an amazing show and to all the friends, family and supporters near and far, who cheered and celebrated along with Rick last night.
It was
truly a night to remember!
